Who is at the door?

After a long day at the University, Michelle walked into her home and slumped down on a recliner sofa next to the window.
“Ma, I’m home!” She called out from the living room. Her mother did not return her greeting, but Michelle could see her through the breakfast nook in the kitchen, busily preparing dinner. She could hear the neat snip of the knife on the wooden cutting board repeating fast. Over and over. Almost like a lullaby. She closed her eyes for a moment when a twinkling bang at the door startled her. She leaned back to see outside the window, and she watched her mother outside as she bent over to pick up her jingling bundle of keys.
“Sweetie,” said the unknown raspy voice from the kitchen. “Who is at the door?”
