JOHN CAGE WASHES HIS SHIRT IN A HOTEL SINK
They force us into damp, daily minutiae and then complain there’s no art.
We hover over pages and canvases for days
teasing imagery alive and no one takes out the garbage.
Man, it stinks in here.

I tell my boyfriend as I walk him through the steps
of a successful load of laundry.
He still doesn’t know why the clothes need room to agitate,
but his heavy fingers become a flock of expert birds
over the keyboard, knowing just when to touch down and when to fly.
