Juliet Cook & John Compton

A Cherry in the Eye

the pinkish juices
resemble sweetness, but salt
grits the socket into lies

a cherry colored baby cries
we must keep her
away from the mirror

we must hide her
in the bedroom closet
covered in spit up

i never wanted her to die
but i never wanted her to be born either
i never wanted anything

except for red eyes
i want those natural lines
those jagged edge

beauty marks
that feline glow
the up all night

party wild
i turn the music up
because who needs gurgling

baby screams
when janis joplin's on
but then a piece of my heart

falls onto the floor
and starts crawling
towards the screaming baby
